A Comprehensive Guide to Public Holidays in Germany (Feiertage)
Germany has a unique system when it comes to public holidays. Unlike many other countries where holidays are standardized nationally, Germany's federal structure means that holidays can vary significantly depending on the state (Bundesland) you are in. Understanding these regional differences is crucial for anyone traveling, working, or doing business in Germany.
National Holidays (Gesetzliche Feiertage)
There are exactly nine public holidays that are celebrated universally across all 16 German states. These include major religious and historical dates:
- New Year's Day (Neujahr): January 1st
- Good Friday (Karfreitag): The Friday before Easter
- Easter Monday (Ostermontag): The Monday following Easter Sunday
- Labor Day (Tag der Arbeit): May 1st
- Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt): 39 days after Easter Sunday
- Whit Monday (Pfingstmontag): 50 days after Easter Sunday
- German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit): October 3rd - This is the only federal holiday mandated by federal law.
- Christmas Day (1. Weihnachtstag): December 25th
- Boxing Day / St. Stephen's Day (2. Weihnachtstag): December 26th
Regional Holidays: Why Do They Differ?
The remaining public holidays are determined at the state level. This is largely due to the historical and religious demographics of the regions. For example, predominantly Catholic states in the south and west, such as Bavaria (Bayern) and Baden-Württemberg, observe holidays like Corpus Christi (Fronleichnam) and All Saints' Day (Allerheiligen).
In contrast, northern and eastern states, which have historically Protestant roots, might observe Reformation Day (Reformationstag). Some states have unique regional holidays; for example, Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are currently the only states to recognize International Women's Day (Frauentag) as an official public holiday.
